Most of us men have said it a thousand times:
“I’m fine, thank you.”
It rolls off the tongue almost without thinking. But the truth is, most of the time we’re not fine. We’re tired, stressed, disappointed, or wrestling with things we don’t want anyone to see.
So why do we hide behind the mask?
1. The Pressure to Be Strong
From the time we were boys, we were told to “be strong” and “don’t cry.” Weakness was shameful. So we learned to cover up.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
The mask may look strong, but God’s strength is found in honest weakness.
2. The Fear of Rejection
There’s a quiet question inside many of us: “If people really knew me, would they still respect me?” To play it safe, we hide behind “I’m fine.”
“The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
The places you want to hide are the very places where God comes near.
3. Not Wanting to Be a Burden
Men often think, “I should handle this myself. I don’t want to dump my problems on anyone else.” So we push it down and keep going.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
Brotherhood and honesty are not burdens—they are blessings.
Taking Off the Mask
Jesus never asked you to fake it. He asked you to follow Him.
That means it’s okay to say:
“I’m struggling.”
“I’m discouraged.”
“I need prayer.”
When you drop the mask, you make space for real connection—with God and with other men who can walk beside you.
A Challenge for This Week
The next time someone asks, “How are you?” don’t rush to say “I’m fine.”
Instead, try being real—just one honest sentence.
It may feel risky, but God meets you in the honesty. And you might be surprised how it opens a door for deeper conversation and freedom.
Closing Thought
You don’t have to pretend. You don’t have to carry it all alone.
In Christ, you are free to be real.
Free to be known.
Free to follow Him with your whole heart.
